SWMG 2011 round 4
Silva managed to win for the first time. In the rapid game the position on the board was completely equal. But Ndjofang had only a few seconds left on the clock. 45.28-22 23-28 46.32x12 21x43 47.22-18? There was no need to sacrifice a piece, since ≡ 47.34-29?! 43-48 48.29x18 19-23 49.18x29 15-20 50.25x14 48x39 51.29-23 leads to a draw. Probably Ndjofang saw this combination, but he had no time to calculate the result. ≡ 13x22 48.34-29 But now there is another combination, and this time it is winning for black: 43-48! 49.29x9 22-28 50.33x22 15-20 51.25x23 48x19 and white resigned.
Georgiev found an interesting way to keep the black attack going. 13-19! 38.24x13 9x18 39.34-29 18-23 40.29x18 12x23!! 41.37-32 7-12 42.32x21 11-16 43.31-27 22x31 44.26x37? White needed to accept the piece sacrifice with ≡ 44.36x27 Then black can make a king with 23-29 45.48-43 29-34, but white is just in time to prepare a break-through on the other side of the board using 46.38-33 34-40 47.33-29 40-45 48.29-23 45-50 49.23-18 12x23 50.21x12 etc. ≡ 16x27 45.48-43 23-28 46.43-39 12-18 The 6 against 6 position turns out to be completely lost for white. 47.36-31(?) 27x36 48.38-32 28-33! 49.39x28 17-21 and white resigned.
One of the blitz games between Amrillaev and Boomstra was really spectacular. 23.33-29? 24x33? Black could take a combination here: ≡ 22x33! 24.31x22 17x28 25.26x8 24-30! 26.32x23 30x48 27.8-3 19x28 But it would take tremendous skills to calculate in a blitz game that black has another combination after 28.3-26 33x24 29.37-31 48x37 30.31x42 with 24-30! 31.35x24 28-33 32.38x29 11-17 33.26x19 14x45 B+ The game finally ended in a draw, after Amrillaev missed a winning opportunity in the endgame. A few games later it was Amrillaev who won, using a simple combination.
Dul was the first one to beat Zhou Wei in a game with regular time controls. 35.50-44? 2-8? As Eric van Dusseldorp showed on the World Draughts Forum, black could win here beautifully using ≡ 20-25! 36.29x20 15x24 Then 37.34-29? fails due to 18-22 38.29x20 25x14 39.21-16 or? 22-27! 40.32x21 7-11 41.16x18 13x22 42.21x12 9-13 43.28x17 13-18 44.12x23 19x50 B+. And so white has to play ≡ 37.44-39 18-22 38.21-16 25-30 39.34x25 24-29 40.33x24 22x44 41.24-20 44-50 with a winning endgame for black. ≡ 36.37-31? 18-23!! A nice combination! 37.29x18 12x23 38.21x25 24-30 39.35x24 19x50 40.28x8 50x3 41.25-20 3x25 42.32-28 25-14? 43.28-22 15-20 and white resigned. That was not needed, since after black's 42nd move the endgame is a draw. With ≡ 25-48! 43.31-27 48-39! 44.28-23 39-34 45.23-19 34-30 46.19-14 30-25 black could have won the game in a more regular way.
