Two short games

The Russian Championship 2009 was won by GMI Alexander Georgiev, and the tournament in Salou 2009 by GMI Guntis Valneris. We will take a look at two short victories of both players in a gametype with a certain similarity. In both cases their opponents are talented youth players.

Shaibakov,A. - Georgiev,A. 0-2 11-04-2009

1.34-29 17-22 2.40-34 11-17 3.45-40 6-11 4.32-28 19-23 5.28x19 14x23 6.31-27 22x31 7.36x27 10-14 8.41-36 20-25 9.50-45 14-19 10.46-41 5-10 11.35-30!? Shaibakov chooses an extremely aggressive plan against the former world champion. 17-21 12.37-32

10-14 13.33-28 An alternative plan was to prepare a Roozenburg attack with 14.40-35 followed by 44-40 and 30-24 14-20 14.40-35 11-17 15.39-33 The consequence of avoiding the Roozenburg attack will be that the white right wing is being locked up. Ultimately that will lead to the defeat of the white player. 21-26 16.41-37 17-22 17.28x17 12x21 18.43-39 7-11 19.33-28 11-17 20.49-43 17-22 21.28x17 21x12 Despite the less than ideal structure of the white right wing, the attack 22.44-40 12-17 23.30-24 19x30 24.35x24 was still an option. 22.38-33 12-17 23.33-28 17-21 24.43-38 2-7 25.39-33 8-12 26.37-31 26x37 27.42x31 21-26 28.47-42 26x37 29.42x31 4-10 30.48-42 10-14

42-37?

In this position white absolutely had to play the active move 32.27-22 18x27 33.31x22 with an interesting position that isn't necessarily better for black. Why the white plan is deemed to fail becomes clear later on.

3-8 32.31-26? And after this second mistake white will be completely suffocated. Here the only chance for survival was 33.27-22 18x27 34.31x22 16-21 35.29x18 12x23. Then the position is still very dangerous for white. For example after 36.34-29? 25x34! 37.29x40 20-24 38.44-39 14-20! the white position is hopeless. But with 36.33-29 21-27(!) 37.22x31 8-12 38.29x18 13x42 39.37x48 20-24 40.32-28 he can still fight for a draw.

1-6 33.44-40(?) Probably white had planned to play 33.37-31 here. But then Georgiev would also have played the effective move 20-24! 34.29x20 15x24. Now the backwards exchange 35.34-29? fails due to a standard combination known as the coupe Springer: 25x34! 36.29x40 24-29 37.33x24 19x30 38.28x10 30-34 39.40x29 9-14 40.10x19 13x42! 20-24! Georgiev has waited patiently until the circumstances for locking up the white right wing are ideal. 34.29x20 15x24 35.37-31 7-11 36.26-21 11-17 37.31-26 23-29 38.34x23 18x29 and white resigned.

Guntis Valneris - Artem Ivanov 2-0 27-05-2009

1.34-30 17-22 2.40-34 11-17 3.44-40 6-11 4.50-44 20-25 5.32-28 19-23 6.28x19 14x23 7.31-27 22x31 8.36x27 10-14 9.41-36 5-10 10.46-41 1-6 11.33-29 17-21 12.37-32

The gametype is similar to the previous game. An important difference is the white piece on 35 instead of 33. This gives white more control over the right side of the board. 11-17 13.39-33 21-26 14.41-37 17-21 15.43-39 12-17 16.33-28 17-22 17.28x17 21x12 18.39-33 6-11 19.44-39 11-17 Buzinskij showed on the Shashki Forum that white can not play 20.37-31? 26x28 21.33x11 due to the counter action 12-17 22.11x22 13-19 23.22x24 14-20 24.29x18 20x29 25.34x23 25x21 20.49-44 17-21

21.48-43?! Valneris voluntarily gives up the formation 37-42-48 and aims for a total clash of the positions. It's very likely that the tactical genius had already spotted the combination on the 26th move. 12-17 22.33-28 14-19 23.39-33 10-14 24.44-39 4-10 25.47-41! Indeed here the attack 26.30-24 19x30 27.35x24 7-11 28.28x19 14x23 was hardly playable. But it it will turn out that white has another for playing this move. 14-20? 26.30-24! 19x30 27.28x19 13x24 28.33-28!! 24x31 29.35x24 20x29 30.34x1 and black resigned. On the 25th move black should have played 17-22 26.28x17 21x12 27.30-24 19x30 28.35x24 with interesting play for both. Note that in this variant white should definitely not play 28.33-28? 7-11! and he has to accept an inferior position with 29.27-22 18x27 30.29x7 8-12 31.32x21 26x17 32. 7x18 13x44 33.40x49, since 1) 30.30-24? fails due to 19x30 31.35x24 15-20 32.24x4 12-17 33.28x10 26-31 34.37x26 9-14 35.10x19 13x35 36. 4x22 17x30 and 2) 30.39-33 2-7 31.43-39 14-20 32.30-24 19x30 33.35x24 25-30! 34.34x5 23x43 35.38x49 15-20 36.24x15 13-19 37. 5x23 18x47 looks quite dangerous too.
