Flits - Krajenbrink,J. 1-1 (23-07-2002)

The game in the fifth round is the most exciting one so far. Krajenbrink chooses a risky strategy and brings Flits into deep troubles.

1.31-27 18-22 2.27x18 13x22 3.36-31 12-18 4.35-30 7-12 5.30-25 9-13 6.41-36 1-7 7.34-29 17-21 8.31-26 22-27 9.26x17 12x21 10.40-34 7-12 11.37-31 12-17 12.31x22 17x37 13.42x31 21-26 14.47-41 26x37 15.41x32 4-9 16.46-41 2-7 17.45-40 16-21 18.32-27 21x32 19.38x27

The plan that Krajenbrink now chooses (18-22 followed by 19-24?!?!) happens very rarely in practice. And more often than not it is carried out by very weak players, who do not recognize the danger of the inactive pieces on 5, 10, 15 and 20. But Krajenbrink has estimated very well that in this case the unusual formation on blacks left wing is in fact very strong.

18-22 20.27x18 13x22 21.43-38 7-12 22.36-31 19-24

diagram 2

The six black pieces on blacks left wing block eight pieces of white. Normally this would not be a problem, but in this case white has also very little influence on the center and on its left wing. This makes the situation very tricky for white. Of course it is crucial that 23.38-32? is impossible because of the combination 22-27 24.31x22 14-19 25.25x23 12-17 26.29x20 17x46.

23.48-42 9-13

The next move from Flits seems rather useless. But it is not at all easy to find a better plan. Perhaps taking possession of square 27 would have been better. For example, 24.41-36 12-17 25.31-27 22x31 26.36x27 8-12 27.49-43 11-16 28.27-22 17x28 29.33x22 24x33 30.38x29 6-11 31.43-38 and since black cannot attack the white piece on 22 ( 16-21 32.38-32 12-18? 33.32-27 21x32 34.39-33 18x27 35.33-28 32x23 36.29x9) he has to settle for 12-18 32.22-17 11x22 33.29-24 20x29 34.34x12 13-18 35.12x23 14-20 36.25x14 10x28 with a draw.

Now the situation is getting clearer. White is in big troubles. After 28.40-35 black can already force a piece advantage with 13-18 because after 29.37-32 27-31 the exchange 30.42-37? 31x42 31.38x47 fails due to a simple combination. The plan that Krajenbrink chooses in the game is equally good.

28.40-35 6-11 29.37-32 11-16 30.32-28 21-26 31.42-37 16-21 32.49-43 27-31 33.28-23 31x42 34.38x47 13-18 35.23x12 8x17 36.44-40 26-31 37.43-38

diagram 4

Black can choose how to win this position. After 21-27 or after 17-22 (prevents 38.38-32 by 14-19 39.25x23 22-27 40.29x20 27x18) white has no serious defense left. Krajenbrinks next move is a little bit inaccurate. Perhaps he already had some time troubles here?

31-36 38.38-32 17-22

diagram 5

And here the move 3-9 would have been much stronger, for example 39.32-28 9-13 40.28-23 13-18 41.23x12 17x8 42.35-30 24x44 43.39x50 21-26 44.33-28 26-31 45.28-22 31-37 46.22-17 37-41 47.17-11 8-12 48.11-6 41-46 with a hopeless position for white.

39.35-30 24x44 40.39x50 3-8 41.50-44 8-13

diagram 6

After Krajenbrinks last move, it is probably a draw. With 8-12 he would still have had very good opportunities for winning the game.
