Flits - Krajenbrink,J. 2-0 (22-07-2002)

As a parallel event to the Ordina tournament in Nijmegen, a very interesting event is taking place: a match between the computer program Flits from Adri Vermeulen and GMI Johan Krajenbrink. We will have a look at the third round.

1.33-28 20-25 2.39-33 15-20 3.44-39 10-15 4.31-27 5-10 5.37-31 19-23 6.28x19 14x23 7.41-37 10-14 8.33-28 4-10 9.28x19 14x23 10.39-33 17-22 11.31-26 22x31 12.36x27 13-19 13.50-44 8-13 14.44-39 2-8 15.46-41 10-14 16.41-36 12-17 17.49-44

diagram 1

Since the normal continuation 7-12 is prohibited, Krajenbrink decides to develop the crown piece 3 very early in the game. It is very instructive to see how Flits deals with that.

8-12 18.33-28 3-8 19.37-31 17-22 20.28x17 12x21 21.26x17 11x22

diagram 2

Now Flits heads for square 25. Because of blacks missing crown piece, the piece on 25 will obstruct the development of blacks left wing.

22.34-30 25x34 23.40x29 23x34 24.39x30 20-25 25.44-39 25x34 26.39x30 15-20 27.43-39 7-12 28.30-25 6-11 29.39-33 19-23 30.35-30 13-19 31.33-29 23x34 32.30x39 19-23 33.39-33 9-13 34.31-26 22x31 35.36x27 11-17 36.45-40

diagram 3

Although the classical position after 13-19 37.33-28 looks promising for white, it isn't really dangerous for black. Therefore blacks next move can be considered a mistake, because it gives white an opportunity to start a dangerous entanglement of the center piece on 23.

14-19 37.25x14 19x10 38.48-43 10-15 39.43-39 17-22 40.39-34 22x31 41.26x37

diagram 4

White controls the strategic squares 27, 29 and 30. And thus black must be very careful in this situation. The position requires a lot of calculations, which is clearly an advantage for Flits.

1-7 42.40-35 7-11 43.32-27 11-17 44.33-29 17-22 45.35-30 22x31 46.37x26

diagram 5

With its last move, Flits has prepared a devious trap for his human opponent. It's hard to believe, but after the next exchange 16-21 the position is completely lost for black! After 13-19 47.38-32 15-20 48.32-27 12-17 it would have been possible to defend the black position. And also after 12-17 47.30-24 17-22 a draw was still possible. But who would have expected that this is not the case after blacks next move?

16-21 47.26x17 12x21 48.38-32 8-12

diagram 6

Here 13-19 would certainly not have been a better continuation. For example 49.42-37 21-26 (or 15-20 50.37-31 8-12 [after 21-26 ? white has a simple combination: 51.32-28 26x37 52.30-25 23x32 53.25x3 ] 51.31-26 12-17 52.30-25 W+) 50.29-24 8-13 51.32-27 23-28 52.34-29 ! and white wins comfortably. And also the variant 21-26 49.30-24 26-31 is losing, because of the elegant 50.32-28 23x32 51.42-37 31x42 52.47x27 8-12 53.34-30 12-17 54.30-25 W+

49.30-24 12-17

The alternative 21-26 50.32-27 23-28 51.47-41 12-17 52.41-36 17-22 53.34-30 22x31 54.36x27 is hopeless too.

50.47-41 17-22 51.41-36

It looks a bit early to give up already, but indeed black is lost: 22-27 52.42-38 21-26 53.32x21 26x17 54.38-32 17-22 55.32-27 (and certainly not 55.36-31? 22-28 56.32-27 28-32 57.27x38 23-28 with a draw) 22x31 56.36x27 23-28 57.34-30 W+
