Ukrainian Championship 2016

Recently the championship of the Ukraine was played in Poltava. The tournament was won by Yuriy Anikeev (19 points), followed by Artem Ivanov (17 points) and Vasyl Pikiniar (14 points). In many games Anikeev managed to gain a positional advantage early in the game, and then patiently keep the pressure on until the opponent collapsed during the late middle game.

Yuriy Anikeev - Vladyslav Antonovych 2-0 (16-12-2016)

1.32-28 19-23 2.28x19 14x23 3.37-32 10-14 4.41-37 5-10 5.35-30 14-19 6.30-25 10-14 7.46-41 17-21 8.31-26 21-27 9.32x21 16x27 10.40-35 11-17 11.44-40 7-11 12.33-29 20-24 13.29x20 15x24 14.38-33 24-30

This exchange gives white a small initiative. The more aggressive 14-20 15.25x14 9x20 was a good alternative here.

15.35x24 19x30 16.50-44 30-35 17.34-29 23x34 18.40x29 1-7 19.37-31 17-22 20.45-40 18-23 21.29x18 12x23 22.33-28 23x32 23.42-37 13-19 24.37x17 11x22 25.41-37 19-23 26.48-42 9-13 27.37-32 27x38 28.42x33 7-12 29.31-27 22x31 30.36x27 13-18 31.43-38 12-17 32.38-32 6-11 33.40-34 8-12 34.49-43

diagram 1

The game has entered the decisive phase. The white advantage is still marginal, but black has some tough decisions to make.

4-10

It turns out that 2-8 35.33-29 11-16 was much safer for black.

35.33-29 14-19?

It's quite dangerous for black to close the position. A better plan was 11-16 36.47-41 2-8 37.39-33 10-15 38.43-38 17-21 39.26x17 12x21 40.29-24 8-13 41.44-39 3-8

36.39-33! 2-7?

This is already losing. The only way to defend the black position was 10-14 37.33-28 11-16 38.47-42 2-7 39.42-38 14-20 40.25x14 19x10 41.28x19 18-22 42.27x18 12x14. Probably Antonovych expected something like 37.33-28 10-15 38.43-39 15-20 39.25x14 19x10 40.28x19 18-22 41.27x18 12x14. But white has better than that:

37.25-20! 3-9

The exchange 10-14 38.20x9 3x14 was not possible due to 39.32-28 23x21 40.34-30 35x24 41.29x9 W+.

38.43-39 10-15 39.44-40 15x24 40.29x20 35x44 41.39x50 11-16 42.50-44 7-11 43.44-40

Vasyl Pikiniar - Yuriy Anikeev 0-2 (17-12-2016)

1.32-28 19-23 2.28x19 14x23 3.33-28 23x32 4.37x28 16-21 5.39-33 10-14 6.44-39 5-10 7.50-44 11-16 8.41-37 6-11 9.37-32 20-24 10.42-37 21-26 11.47-42 1-6 12.34-29 17-22 13.28x17 12x21 14.29x20 15x24 15.32-28 11-17 16.38-32 17-22 17.28x17 21x12 18.32-28 7-11 19.43-38 11-17 20.37-32 26x37 21.42x31 2-7 22.46-41 14-19 23.39-34 17-22 24.28x17 12x21 25.44-39 21-26 26.41-37 8-12 27.49-43 10-15 28.32-28 7-11 29.37-32 26x37 30.32x41

diagram 2

12-17! 31.48-42 17-22! 32.28x17 11x22

Anikeev takes advantage of the disbalance in the white position. White has no power on the left wing, and it's difficult for white to develop the pieces on the right wing.

33.38-32 6-11 34.32-28!?

This looks quite dangerous. But 34.32-27? 22x31 35.36x27 11-17 and 34.42-38? 22-27! 35.32x21 16x27 B+ were not possible for white. Another way to defend the white position was 34.41-37 9-14 35.34-30 4-9 36.37-31 22-27 37.32x21 16x27 38.31x22 18x27 39.43-38 13-18 40.39-34!

11-17 35.34-29 16-21 36.29x20 15x24 37.40-34 9-14 38.34-29 3-9 39.29x20 14x25 40.39-34 19-24 41.41-37 13-19 42.37-32?

Now Anikeev wins the game using a simple combination. White could still make a draw using 42.34-29 21-26 43.29x20 25x14 44.37-32! and now both 26-31 45.36x27 22x31 46.43-38 31-36 47.42-37 as 18-23 45.35-30 14-20 46.30-25 20-24 47.42-38! are insufficient for black.

24-30 43.35x13 21-27 44.32x23 9x49 45.28x17 49-44 46.34-29 44x11 47.29-23 11-7 48.23-19 7-2

Yuriy Anikeev - Egor Bobkov 2-0 (19-12-2016)

1.33-29 17-22 2.39-33 11-17 3.44-39 6-11 4.50-44 1-6 5.32-28 16-21 6.31-26 19-23 7.28x19 14x23 8.29-24 20x29 9.33x24 13-19 10.24x13 8x19 11.37-32 11-16 12.41-37 10-14 13.35-30 9-13 14.30-25 4-9 15.34-29 23x34 16.40x29 5-10 17.37-31 3-8 18.46-41 22-28 19.32x23 19x28 20.44-40 18-23 21.29x18 13x22 22.38-33 21-27 23.42-38 9-13 24.41-37 17-21 25.26x17 22x11 26.31x22 28x17 27.40-34 12-18 28.34-29 7-12 29.38-32 16-21 30.43-38 17-22 31.45-40

diagram 3

14-19?

This is an inaccurate move. Black should have prepared this move with 21-26 32.40-35 14-19.

32.25-20! 15x24 33.29x20 10-14 34.20x9 13x4 35.37-31!

Most likely Bobkov had missed that 21-26? now fails due to 36.32-27! 26x37 37.38-32 W+

11-16 36.32-28! 12-17 37.39-34

Black has big troubles now. In the game Anikeev wins convincingly. And at first sight it is not clear where black missed a better defense.

8-13 38.38-32 2-8 39.49-43 19-24 40.43-38 4-10 41.47-42 10-14 42.34-29 14-19 43.29x20 19-23 44.28x19 13x15 45.31-26 8-13 46.33-28 22x33 47.38x29 13-19 48.42-38 15-20 49.38-33 18-22 50.48-43 6-11 51.43-38 19-24 52.32-28 20-25 53.29x20 25x14 54.40-34

diagram 4

20-24 20.29x20 25x14 21.39-33 17-22! 22.28x17 11x22

Black takes advantage of the fact that the logical 23.34-29 23x34 24.40x29 is prevented by the combination 22-27 25.32x21 12-17.

23.44-39(?) 23-28! 24.32x23 19x28 25.33-29?

It seems too ambitious to start a massive surrounding of the solid black center. An alternative plan was 25.35-30 6-11 26.37-31 12-17 27.31-26 11-16 28.41-37 16-21 29.47-42 21-27 30.30-25 8-12 31.37-32 28x37 32.42x31 although this still looks better for black.

6-11 26.38-33 11-17 27.43-38 17-21 28.36-31 21-27 29.41-36 10-15 30.48-42

Here it was more realistic to neutralize the black attack using 30.34-30 14-20 31.39-34 28x39 32.34x43 20-25 33.29-24 25x34 34.40x29.

diagram 5

The white strategy has failed. In the game Anikeev had no problems to convert his advantage to a win.

Yuriy Anikeev - Maksim Oprishchenko 2-0 (22-12-2016)

diagram 6

In this well known opening scheme white has an obstructed piece on 36, while black suffers from an uneven piece distribution.

11-17 17.45-40 9-14 18.40-34 17-21 19.33-29 7-11 20.43-39 1-7 21.38-33 3-9 22.49-44 11-17 23.30-25 17-22 24.29-24 19x30 25.35x24 22x31 26.36x27

From now on the black player simplifies the position using a large number of exchanges on his right wing. However, it is not easy to find a more constructive plan.

12-17 27.33-28 17-22 28.28x17 21x12 29.42-38 18-22 30.27x18 13x22 31.47-42 22-27 32.32x21 26x17 33.37-32 16-21 34.34-29 21-27 35.32x21 17x26 36.39-33 6-11 37.42-37 11-17 38.38-32 12-18 39.41-36 8-13 40.48-42 2-8 41.32-28 17-22 42.28x17 18-23 43.29x18 13x11 44.36-31 8-13 45.31-27

diagram 7

White has a considerable tempo advantage (+8) now, but black has enough defense for a draw. He needs to be careful though, for example 13-19 10.24x13 9x18 11.33-28 11-17 12.42-38 4-10? is losing due to 13.38-32 18-23 14.28x19 14x23 15.25-20! 7-12 16.44-39 12-18 17.27-21! 18-22 18.21x12 22-27 19.32x21 26x8 20.39-33 with a 3x3 opposition.

4-10 46.37-32 14-19 47.33-28 19x30 48.25x34 7-12 49.34-29 10-15 50.42-37 9-14 51.44-40

diagram 8

Until now Oprischenko has defended well. A solid way to make a draw here was 15-20 52.40-34 11-16 53.34-30 14-19! 54.28-23 19x28 55.32x23 12-17! etc.

13-19(?) 52.40-34!

Now black can not play 11-16? due to 11.28-23 19x28 12.32x23 12-17 13.29-24 W+.

11-17?

This enables white to force an easy win. Still it was possible to make a draw for black using 15-20 10.28-23 19x28 11.32x23 12-17! 12.27-21 17-22 13.21-16 14-19!
